Allison Timeline...Possibly the worst storm to ever hit Houston, Tropical Storm Allison claimed almost two dozen lives and caused over $1 billion of property damage. June 5, 2001 The first tropical storm of the Atlantic hurricane season develops in northwestern Gulf of Mexico. The storm, centered about 80 south-southeast of Galveston Island, packed 60 mph winds. June 6, 2001 Allison is downgraded to a tropical depression as its center passes through Houston. The storm caused minor damage in Houston, leaving behind several flooded streets, stalled cars and downed trees. Hundreds of drivers around the Houston area were stuck in their vehicles throughout the night as they tried to travel through flooding roadways. Harris, Montgomer, Walker and Houston Counties remain under flood watches. |

Allison Timeline...June 7, 2001 Tropical Storm Allison continued to douse Houston and surrounding areas with more than 11 inches of rain in some places. Its center now located over Lufkin, Allison begins to move southward toward Houston again. June 9, 2001 Heavy rains from Tropical Depression Allison continue to drench the
Houston area. Rising water forced officials to close down the following
streets, highways and farm-to-market-roads: Southwest Freeway at Westpark,
East Loop at Market. HOV Gulf Freeway, FM 2850, North Loop 336, I-45
at Gladstell, Highway 10 at South Tollway, South Loop at Scott, I-10
East Wayside at McCarty, 290 Pinemont at Hollister, I-45 along the
Conroe area, League Line Road, 105 West, FM 1488, FM 1484, Highway
242 at I-45, 105 East, Calvary Road between Walnut Cove and I-45, 297
and I-45, FM 1488 West of 45, Willis Waukegan from 1484 to 105, Highway
242 and I-45, Sam Houston Tollway eastbound exit to Ella Blvd, and
all exit ramps in both directions on the Hardy Toll Road |

Allison Timeline...June 12, 2001 Emergency officials estimated that about 20,000 homes were flooded. Early storm damage predictions for the Houston area were estimated at $1 billion. President Bush on Saturday declared southeast Texas a "major disaster area" and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the aftermath of the storm. The storm claimed 19 victims, most of whom drowned and a few others electrocuted. Mayor Lee Brown urged Houstonians to refrain from calling 911 for non-life-threatening calls, because emergency operators are swamped. |
